The numbers paint a grim picture. 71% of data breaches are inadvertent and accidental, typically caused by careless users. Meanwhile, 65% are classified as negligent data breaches, triggered by users wilfully, but without malice, ignoring security policies. Finally, 60% breaches are malicious in nature, attributed to users wilfully and knowingly causing harm.

It is imperative for businesses to meet this security challenge head-on, especially in the African subcontinent where cyberattacks are escalating and new cybersecurity risks are emerging. This is largely due to the unparalleled deviations in the way companies and their employees are currently forced to do business, remotely and off-premises. Fraudulent scams are also rising in frequency in the current climate. Hence it is not surprising that businesses in Africa are struggling to address these challenges while remaining operational.

The way forward

On October 13, Global CIO Forum and emt Distribution, in association with Acunetix and Netsparker, are hosting the African Convergence to Technology WebSummit. The virtual gathering will discuss market trends, offer technology insights and suggestions that will deliver a more secure and safer 2021 for businesses in Africa.
