Omar Al Olama, who serves as the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, to join the High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence. This body has been established to addre0073s the global challenges, opportunities, and governance issues related to AI. It consists of 38 distinguished individuals from around the world, including high-ranking government officials, technology entrepreneurs, academics, experts, and specialists.
Notable members of this advisory body include Her Excellency Carme Artigas, Spain’s Secretary of State for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence; Ian Bremmer, President and Founder of Eurasia Group; Natasha Crampton, Chief Responsible AI Officer at Microsoft; Hiroaki Kitano, Chief Technology Officer of Sony Group; Haksoo Ko, Head of the Personal Information Protection Commission in Korea; Mira Moratti, Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI; and Amandeep Singh Gill, the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology.
H.E. Omar Sultan Al Olama, in response to his appointment, emphasized that the UAE’s forward-thinking approach and commitment to addressing future challenges have led to this recognition. He praised the UAE’s efforts in developing advanced AI solutions and fostering international collaboration to shape a more secure and inclusive technological future.
“Joining the UN Advisory Body on AI is a great opportunity for driving a qualitative leap in the joint international efforts aiming to establish a comprehensive governance system for AI-related fields. The new system shall leverage AI opportunities, enable countries and societies to participate in the process of technological development, while maintaining the balance between humans and machines within a safe, inclusive, technological future ecosystem for all,” HE added.
The UN Advisory Body’s primary objectives include aiding the UN Secretary-General and member states in achieving a global consensus on AI-related risks and challenges, exploring how AI can contribute to sustainable development goals, and promoting international cooperation in AI management. The body will focus on three key areas: international AI governance, understanding and addressing risks and challenges, and maximizing AI’s potential to accelerate the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The Advisory Body plans to create common ground by identifying priorities for both governments and the private sector to effectively respond to the rapid advancements in AI and technology. Comprising experts from various sectors, including government, the private sector, and civil society, it will engage with existing and emerging initiatives and international organizations to bridge perspectives across different stakeholder groups and networks.
His Excellency António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, announced the establishment of this high-level Advisory Body in a speech before the UN Security Council in July, emphasizing its role in analyzing and proposing recommendations for the global governance of AI.
