Grant Amos, General Manager-MEA, Actifio talked on how Actifio is transcending legacies to transform business.
Living up to the theme, Actifio claims its strides to transform business digitally. Grant emphasizes “When we look at the business environment, there has been an evident and ongoing transition. Organizations have virtualized their servers with VMware products, they have virtualized their networks with CISCO products and they are simplifying procedures and easing provisions. But when we look at the Storage and back-end environments, multiple products are continuously being used to control that whole environment. People are still using different kinds of digification tools, replication tools, backup tools to control that whole environment. Actifio is virtualizing all that products and filling in the missing components in virtualization.”
Organizations are having a tough time in migrating to virtualized environment. Grant is of the opinion that challenge lies in the long term investment in the traditional architectures and because the architecture is made of multiple components it is not easy to change just one component. But if you change just one component, what you get is an incremental benefit. “Significant change brings significant risk and this risk leads to reluctance. This is one of the situations when people want to do the right thing about the constraints of the business. So the difference is in the desire to have a change and the ability to have an infrastructure apt for the change.”
Sharing a success story, Grant gives the example of a test development centre where huge amount of data is accumulated and copied on daily basis. “In a large test development environment application is the key and infrastructure is just lagging behind. So business are focusing now on delivering those applications efficiently, effectively and quickly. One of the challenges that a test development environment faces is that they need numerous copies of their data and it takes a lot of time to physically move the data. We take one single copy of that data and provide, for example, 20 virtual copies of that data. So they don’t need terra bytes of data space and it thus saves time also. Actifio is, against perceptions, not just back-up but we are enabling enterprises to cut down on their cost and huge investment in storing data. “ says Grant.
Actifio revolves around virtualizing data. In a traditional system, the back-up device stores the data and incremental images of the data and when you want to see the data you have to move the data. Actifio simplifies this procedure by enabling the servers to provide you a copy of the virtualized data. “We are not moving data and therefore saving time and space. “
The legacy in backup is that, it converts every data into a proprietary language which makes it readable only to that device. The bottom line is—you cannot do anything about it. Organizations have to go through the rigorous procedure of bringing back all that data or store it in the new device or start afresh with the new device and manage all the data with the new device.
