FVC signs agreement with Meteorology Department of the CAA

The Meteorology Department of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in Qatar has selected Polycom to build its communications infrastructure at four of its offices in the country. The deal was signed between the CAA, FVC and its partner, Qatar Datamation Systems, in Qatar to deploy two complete Polycom RPX systems with four screens at two locations and supporting Polycom conferencing systems in two other locations. These locations include Abu Hamour, Old Airport, New Airport and its main administration office.

Established in 1982, the Meteorology department in CAA Qatar started a project for modernizing and upgrading its Meteorological instruments and facilities with MFI (Meteo France International) in 2005. Now the Department has four manned stations in (Doha, Alkor, Ruwais and Umsaeed), nine Automatic Stations and one upper air Station at Doha International Airport.

Ahmed Abdulla, Director of Meteorology Department at CAA Qatar, said, “We regularly conduct daily briefings among all our forecasters. These daily briefings contain meteorological maps, details, diagrams and other documents. The new system will allow us to share this crucial information, including live video feeds, in real time, for better collaboration.”

According to Abdulla, in addition to inter-departmental collaboration, relevant information can now also be shared over IP/ISDN networks with external bodies, both government and private, ports, shipping offices as well some of the oil & gas installations around the country. The Meteorology department is considering mobility as well, enabling attendees to join these conferences from mobile devices such as laptops, phones and tablets on the go.

“These meetings will be recorded,” Abdulla continued. “Optionally, these recordings can be edited and published on a content management portal to be viewed by users on the Internet.”

K.S. Parag, Managing Director at FVC, said, “This is a great opportunity to highlight the collaborative effectiveness of our Polycom communications systems in an industry that impacts crucial business decisions, especially with the ability to reach across all platforms including mobile.
