Siemon Conducts ETF on Connected Lighting Technology in Intelligent Buildings

Siemon said that its ‘Intelligent Buildings and Connected Lighting’ Emerging Technology Forum (ETF) recently held in Qatar was a great success.

The event took place at the Crowne Plaza Doha Business Park last month and attracted more than 60 attendees including end users from the education, finance, healthcare, aviation, real estate and government sectors as well as consultants, architects and partners from the region.

With the participation of Cisco and Signify, the ETF focussed on educating the audience on the advantages that digital lighting solutions can bring to smart building owners and operators and informing them about key technology advancements in PoE-enabled lighting.

“Digital lighting systems are now becoming increasingly popular in the Middle East and widespread deployment continues to grow”, said Prem Rodrigues, Siemon’s Director of Sales and Marketing for the Middle East, India and SAARC at Siemon. “The associated benefits include reduced energy costs, significantly lower capital investment due to lower upfront materials and installation costs and a far greater lifespan than other luminaire design alternatives. Qatar is an early adaptor of new technologies and we are witnessing great enthusiasm around these new technologies”.

In her presentation, Valerie Maguire, Director of Standards and Technology at Siemon, discussed cabling infrastructure design considerations and media selection strategies for optimum support of Power over Ethernet enabled lighting. She highlighted that deployment of a zone cabling topology provides best support of these systems as it offers the greatest flexibility and ease of reconfiguration, administration, and cable management with the least amount of cost and labour. As for cabling media selection her recommendation included class EA/category 6A and class FA/category 7A copper cabling. These solutions exhibit improved heat dissipation properties for optimum performance.

Usaid Khazi Syed, System Engineer at Cisco and Olav Scholte, Strategic Alliance and Government Relations Manager at Signify further discussed how to converge standalone building systems into one IP platform and how to build building intelligence with PoE lighting and other IoT devices.

Siemon also showcased its range of ConvergeIT cabling solutions for the smart building space, including high-performance category 6A Z-MAX and category 7A TERA copper cabling and Z-Plug field terminated plugs for connecting IP and PoE-enabled end devices in the building.
