“It was only a matter of time before a new strain of ransomware was revealed. Bad Rabbit appears to be targeted at Corporate networks, but only time will tell how far this attack will spread. We continue to see this lucrative business of ransomware wreak havoc, as the perfect storm of poor maintenance of updates, weak security measures, employee and user errors of judgement, and pseudonymous cryptocurrencies exist.

Businesses shouldn’t strive to make themselves hack-proof – it’s an impossible state to achieve due to the ever-evolving threats. Rather, updates should be maintained, processes to support IT securities policies adhered to, and robust IT defences in place – plus, backups located off the live IT network should be a key part of your data management strategy. We have seen so many businesses overcome ransomware attacks, by being able to backup from a high-quality copy of data located off-site.

Finally, a word of caution to organisations that get compromised. You should be aware that there is no obligation for criminals to supply decryption keys following the payment of a ransom. Veeam strongly urges organisations not to pay ransoms if possible. Doing so directly funds development of new breeds of attack.”
