Vertiv has been awarded the ”Best Energy Efficiency Solution” award for its Energy Savings as a Service (ESaaS) concept at Telefonica’s 10th Global Workshop on Energy and Climate Change. Specifically, Vertiv won thanks to the project delivered for Telefonica’s Concepción building in Madrid, where energy consumption got slashed by up to 85% in some of the technical rooms, saving about one gigawatt of power per year.
Each year the Workshop brings together people from all the countries where Telefónica operates, to present the most recent initiatives in renewable energies and energy efficiency and to set new challenges to further reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint of the telecommunications giant globally. Last year, Vertiv won the same award in recognition of the thermal management systems installed in one of Telefónica’s most important data centres in Colombia, near Bogotà, while in 2017 it was awarded “Best Partner of the Year”.
In February 2018, Vertiv and Telefónica announced a long-term global alliance to boost energy savings through customised infrastructure solutions. As a result of this agreement, Vertiv now provides ESaaS across Telefónica’s core and access sites in Europe and Latin America, covering all facets from initial site assessment to comprehensive maintenance services over the next ten years.
“We have reached our energy and climate change objectives ahead of time, so we have set even more ambitious goals to use more renewable energy, achieve more energy efficiency and emit less CO2 emissions,” says Nilmar Seccomandi, Head of Network & System Infrastructure of Telefónica. “To meet the new objectives it is essential to industrialise the ESaaS model, a challenge that Vertiv embraced two years ago and that has lead to the technological renovation of the Concepción building for Telefónica in Spain. We hope that Vertiv will present similar projects for other countries in the 2020 workshop, which will be held in Chile.”
“This recognition from Telefónica, which has been granted to Vertiv for the second year running, testifies to Vertiv’s commitment in continuous energy efficiency improvements, and also recognises the expertise of our people and the quality of the solutions we develop. With our contribution, customers manage to be sustainable over time, improving their environmental impact, while obtaining significant cost savings in their operations,” said Fernando García, vice president and general director of Vertiv in Latin America,
Oscar Fenoll, Vertiv’s global account manager for Telefónica, added: “The great cooperation between Telefónica and Vertiv in the field of energy efficiency is being carried out project by project and is resulting in energy savings. The three awards granted by Telefónica over the past few years endorse the good path taken, which is now intended to accelerate through disruptive models such as ESaaS. In addition to improving Telefónica’s environmental footprint, we are all contributing to mitigate the effects of climate change.”
